| In Bruges |

I saw "In Bruges" today. I liked it. It's about 2 gangsters who have been sent to Bruges to hide out after a job that went wrong. It has a mix of crime drama and personal struggle that I find both entertaining and interesting, when done well. And this movie was done well.
There is a theme of the unreal, the imaginary, and the fairytale, throughout the film. It really works, I think because of a combination of a good script, good acting, and the medieval city itself. This theme is a little unusual for a crime drama, and it softens the film and sets it apart from the usual gangster movie.
I am reminded an awful lot of "Things to do in Denver when You're Dead", another very similar movie from the mid 90s. So, maybe it's still a little formulaic, but I think "In Bruges" gives you a little bit more than what you would expect. |

[Apr. 11th, 2008|05:45 pm] |
Short notice here, but in case anyone is in Boston looking for something interesting to do, I offer this suggestion. My roommate is a film student and her (award-winning, does not suck) short film 'Intre Ziduri' is being shown tonight at MIT as part of a festival of european short films. It's at 7pm on MIT, Room 32-123 (Stata Center).
